CPAP Treatment

CPAP therapy is the most effective noninvasive treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. The CPAP Pro systems consist of several CPAP accessories: CPAP Pro machines (flow generators), air tubing and a CPAP headgear (usually a nasal mask). The CPAP Pro machine pushes air through the tubing and nasal mask.

The air passes through your nose and into the throat, where the slight pressure keeps the upper airway open. The low air pressure does not interfere with breathing though some patients need a few nights to get used to the sensation of positive airflow. Many clinicians describe the CPAP PRO therapy as a pneumatic splint, literally meaning an air splint to hold an open throat.

The pneumatically splinted upper airway process is performed when the tongue and soft tissue have fallen to the back of the throat, but the pressure of the air pumped in by the CPAP Pro machine holds the upper airway open.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome is a sleep disorder which characterized by obstruction of upper airways. Obstructive sleep apnea usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. In this situation the airway becomes obstructed at several possible sites.

The upper airway can be obstructed by excess tissue in the airway, large tonsils and large tongue. It also includes the airway muscles relaxing and collapsing during sleep. Another site of obstruction can be the nasal passages.

Average Volume Assured Pressure Support — AVAPS™ — is a revolutionary method of ensuring the delivery of a consistent tidal volume to patients requiring ventilatory support. AVAPS uses an algorithm that estimates the patient's tidal volume over several breaths. The algorithm calculates the change in pressure needed to achieve the target tidal volume then slowly increases or decreases the IPAP pressure to achieve the proper pressure support. AVAPS™, therefore, adapts to disease progression and changes to meet the patient's specific needs while achieving patient comfort and safety.

AVAPS™ technology is available on the BiPAP®AVAPS™ ventilatory support system from Respironics.

With Average Volume Assured Pressure Support (AVAPS™), inspiratory pressure automatically changes to ensure the set tidal volume.

  • Adapts to changing patient needs
  • Improves patient's ventilation efficacy and comfort
  • Increases safety by delivering an average tidal volume
  • Makes the titration process easier

  • Who potentially benefits from AVAPS™ technology?

  • Restrictive patients benefit because AVAPS™ provides the comfort and leak compensation of a pressure mode and the safety of a guaranteed volume.
  • Obese hypoventilation patients benefit because the algorithm compensates for changes in body position and maintains ventilation.
  • COPD patients benefit because AVAPS™ achieves a combination of ventilation comfort and efficiency without compromise. The algorithm applies the right pressure at the right time.

IPAP min From EPAP to IPAP max
IPAP max From IPAP min to 30 cm H2O
Target Vte From 200 ml to 1500 ml

    Suggested Protocol

  • 1.Set target tidal volume to 110% of displayed patient tidal volume in the S/T mode or 8 cc per kg of ideal body weight.
    2.IPAP Max = 25-30 cm H20 IPAP Min = EPAP + 4 cm H2O

  • Respironics does not provide medical advice. This protocol is a suggested protocol only and is not intended to replace or modify your institution's established protocols.

Based on Respironics Digital Auto-Trak™ Sensitivity algorithm performance, AVAPS™ estimates the patient's tidal volume with each breath and compares it with the target tidal volume. If necessary, the algorithm slowly increases or decreases inspiratory pressure for each breath (0.5 to 1 cm H2O/min) in order to achieve the preset tidal volume.
Since the pressure changes smoothly, it will never compromise patient comfort or safety. Leaks are taken into account so that AVAPS™ ensures a true averaged patient tidal volume.
