Bi-PAP Ventilatory System

BiPAP is a low pressure, electrically driven, flow triggered, non-continuous ventilator that provides pressure support ventilation via a nasal mask. The BIPAP system is intended to expand sleep apnea patient's ventilation by supplying pressurized air through a mask. Assistance is provided by the administration of two levels of positive pressure. During exhalation, air pressure is variably positive or near ambient. The inspiratory level is variably positive, and is always higher than the expiratory air pressure.

Bipap Machines

Bipap machines provide a Bi-level treatment in various cases of sleep apnea and other medical conditions. These conditions include some types of respiratory disorders, sleep disorders (e.g. obstructive and centeral sleep apnea) and other syndromes such as lung diseases, neuromuscular diseases and skeletal diseases. The Bi-level Bipap machines deliver 2 sets of pressures; high pressure during inhalation and low pressure during exhalation. The advanced models of this series feature a Spontaneous Mode that intiates breathing when neccessary and turns these machines into a noninvasive ventilator.

AVAPS bipap
BiPAP®AVAPS™ is Respironics' newest noninvasive ventilator for use in the home, and features AVAPS™ (Average Volume Assured Pressure Support) technology—an algorithm that provides an average tidal volume by automatically adapting pressure support to meet the patient's needs. Learn more about AVAPS technology.

The BiPAP® AVAPS™ is a compact and lightweight noninvasive ventilator that is simple to operate, offering a straightforward user interface and an integrated heated humidifier that allows for easier set-up and management.

How Does it Work?

Much like CPAP machines, The Bipap machine provides airway support by blowing air into the patient's airway, usually through a nasal mask or face mask. The main difference between CPAP and Bipap machines is that while a CPAP machine delivers a constant air pressure, The Bipap machine delivers two sets of air pressure - one for inhaling and another for exhaling.

The pressure increases when the patient inhales and decreases when he exhales, making it easier for sleep apnea patients who have difficulty breathing spontaneously at their own rate and depth (and therefore need high air pressure for inhalation).

The Bipap Respironics machine treats patients with neuromuscular diseases, since it delivers air in and out of the lungs without a need of a muscular effort. Bipap machines were developed to give even a better treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome than the usual CPAP therapy that supported breathing only during inhalation.

Many obstructive sleep apnea patients use Bi-level machines because they need a lower pressure during exhalation. The lower pressure makes Positive airway pressure treatment much more comfortable than a CPAP treatment.

Bipap machines offer the most significant improvements in patients' convenience as they achieve patient-machine synchrony.

For a more comfortable therapy, many obstructive sleep apnea patients are recommended to add an integrated humidifier which adds moisture and heat to the dry air provided by the Bipap machine. Much like in CPAP machines, the heated humidifier helps the sleep apnea patient experience a more natural feeling throughout the treatment and eliminate the dryness that obstructive sleep apnea patients often feel during the treatment.
